Flew the longest flight on Earth
I flew the longest flight on Earth, seated in a top-tier business class seat, for $75 in fees. Goes for $5-7k
NYC -> SIN on @SingaporeAir
9,537 miles, an entire day above the clouds. We almost flew off the damn map, had some fun,
Let's get into it 👇🏼
@SingaporeAir Before I get into this wonderous breakdown, bookmark the tweet above so you can refer back to it.
It is truly a must do for anyone, much less an #avgeek who grew up going on one flight year, giddy while plane watching from the terminal, dreaming of a life full of jetsetting
@SingaporeAir Lucky for me, that life is here
But this part doesn't get any easier 🙄
Well, it wasn't bad. The SQ staff who checked us in at the #EWR Biz Class counter were kind
We arrived late, 80 min before the flight, so there was not a soul in line, even though the flight was full
@SingaporeAir We checked both our bags, mine being a calm 45 lbs, and my wife's a smackin' 72. No surprise there.
No complaints
Finished with check in, they handed us a @british_airways EWR lounge invitation 🫠. The SQ Elitist in me flinched a bit more than he should have.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways Our flight, SQ21, was departing at 9:35am
I prefer boarding at the very last minute to avoid the cattle lineup. 20 minutes before is usually a sweet spot as it gives a nice 5 minute buffer for jet bridge closing.
Quick math: we had about 30-40 minutes to hang in the lounge
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways The BA lounge was nicer than expected, and provided a stunning side view of our sky ferry.
Ate some quick bites, and got the mixologist to mix up my protein powder since I had just knocked out a 5am lift in the hotel gym 😆
Imperative to stay on your routines when traveling
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways Boarding process was uneventful. Any day when you can successfully avoid the cattle lineup is a W in my books ✅
We were one of the last passengers to board, which gave us ample space to capture the moment walking in to the glorious A350 cabin
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways This was my first time flying SQ's updated swanky biz class cabin,
I was blown away by the unique seat design. I felt like I was boarding a spaceship.
Not to mention that this business class product felt closer to a first class product, just based on the pod look alone.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways The pods didn't just look badass, but they were supremely comfortable. I have never sat in a biz class seat that had all of the elements checked:
- spacious
- cushiony, but firm at the same time
- lumbar support
- enough space to stretch out legs fully (I'm 6 foot)
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways The IFE screen was massive, and with the way the seat was constructed, it was right in my face.
Great for some "raw dogging". as the kids say 🕵🏼
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways Wait, hold on a seconddd, ALL biz class passengers are awarded free wifi?!?!
This was CLUTCH, being that the flight was going to be a full day, and that the work day was just embarking.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways I had been so giddy for the flight that I didn't even think about it before. I was going to be able to work a full day from the sky!!!
I did some napkin math, planning a 11am - 6pm EST work day, being that we were going to enjoy our takeoff meal, from 9:30 - 11
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways Ah, speaking of meals, my mind went to the menu. I located it and flipped through.
I expected nothing less from SQ, but this was another level. Have a look for yourself
I was intrigued by the "Light Bites" section. I could see a late night indulgence in my future 💭
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways There was plenty of storage space located next to the IFE system: a mirror, a shoe slip, and a divider for that inevitable moment where I get annoyed with the woman and need some me time
Or vice versa, more likely vice versa 😭
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways Another notable thing about the seat was the dynamism of the seat controls.
You know that standard seat control panel for biz class seats?
SQ could NEVER.
They designed a panel fully unique to match their one-of-a-kind seats, including a DND setting.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways It is important to note that while these customized seats do have electronic elements to them, they do not enter bed mode like normal biz class seats
You have to manually pull the seat down to make the bed
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways The stewardess, in her lovely garb, kindly demonstrated this process for us.
She explained, it was an aspect that made these seats far more comfortable than the competitors, since the internal mechanics inside the seat were minimal.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways As we took off, the first meal service began. In true SQ fashion, all the deliciousness was plated to the nines.
We started off with a mouth-watering salmon salad with cheese and fruits.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways Next up for course 2 was a chicken and rice dish. I indulged eagerly, even though I had just eaten in the lounge an hour earlier.
Not every day you get to fly the longest flight in the world 😏
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways After our plates were cleared, I hopped into work mode, hitting the charts. I had never traded from 30,000 feet before
Very surreal experience. Full of gratitude.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways Around this time, most had dozed off, and the Mrs called me back to the bathroom at the back of the biz class cabin to help her fix this pipe under the sink 👀
Was an odd request, but I gladly helped, albeit noisily.
sub to my OF
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways After some more trading, messages, etc... I felt like it was time to enjoy a bit of rest.
I got out my shorts and changed, and also called the stewardess to make my bed.
Yep, it's confirmed, This was by far the most comfortable business class bed/seat I had ever been in.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways For the next 2 hours, I enjoyed a movie, Avatar -- always a classic for me when I travel. I like to envision that I am on a space oddessey to a far away planet.
More now than ever before, on this 20 hour monstrosity of a flight, it makes sense.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways I dozed off, but was awoken around hour 9 to MORE food. Perfect, I had burned so many calories SITTING IN MY SEAT DOING NOTHING
But as you can imagine, I couldn't pass up these delicacies or top tier service on this bucket list experience
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways We were served a salad to start, over a white table cloth per usual.
I had drunken noodles with bok choy for my main.
This time around, I took notice to the weight of the silverware in my hand. It was real silver. Very impressive. No stone left unturned.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways At this point, it was around 8pm for us in our bodies. We had been on the plane for just over 10 hours.
The IFE handset mocked us like that little red devil emoji, only showing the flight map halfway completed 👹
I thought to myself... it's time to buckle up cowboy!!
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways So, dinner had came & gone, but I wasn't sleepy yet. No one was on Slack or emails any longer, so I decided to relax and read.
I powered through until midnight, when I thought it was time to say Helllllooo to that naughty "Light Bites" section I had been so eagerly anticipating
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways A pizza "Margherita" (?) + a glass of whole milk for me, AND 007, because what else?
Some of you have never let your 7 y/o self run wild in Business Class and it shows 😮💨
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways After the pizza was downed, to my chagrin, I did catch some Zzzzs 😴
I was trying to pull an all nighter at this point, because it was afternoon in singapore, a full 12 hours opposite to NYC
Oh well, life is too short to be a control freak.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways I was awoken at around 3:30 am (EST) for our breakfast as we descended into SIN
I was more than a bit rattled by the sheering lights from the window shades (its ok, I'll be alright 😭)
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways I honestly do not remember what breakfast I chose, disoriented is an understatement,
but it was just as yummy as all the meals had been.
That marked 10,000+ calories intake for me on this once in a lifetime flight.
I was shoving food in my mouth every chance I got 😆
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways We landed at 4:15pm Singapore Time, or 4:15am EST, nearly a full day after we had taken off 🤯
About 18:40 in total flight time, we made great time!
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways The crazy part is, our journey wasn't over. We had an hour layover before boarding our next flight to Bali (DPS).
At this point, I was running on adrenaline. #avgeek adrenaline.
I wasn't tired at all either, between my two mini naps I had taken on the flight.
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways We arrived to our gate with no lounge stop in between, after traversing the methodically laid out, but massive Singapore Chanai Airport.
For now, this is where we say goodbye 😪
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways I will be filming a YT video on this experience, where I will include our last flight leg as well
As always, secured this flight for next to nothing, some monopoly money & some change 💸
@SingaporeAir @British_Airways In this case, only $70 in fees. 99% off ✅ Any guesses on how I did it in the comments below?
